Если и есть в этом фильме подлинное движение вперед, оно связано вовсе не с поиском виновного, а с растущей привязанностью сыщика к собственной истории. Сам Хоукс, показывая это движение, неуклонно сохраняет дистанцию. Его как раз забавляет контраст между все более явной вовлеченностью персонажа в расследование (и в любовные отношения) и отстраненностью его самого, рассказчика, от предмета своего рассказа. Этот контраст порождает динамичность комического свойства.
